When the students in our Imagining Your Future (IYF) program attend group sessions with mentors to work on their Career Exploration Roadmaps (described in Issue 25), we invite them to flex their imagination muscles by answering provocative prompts. For example:
“If I have the passion to do something, I can succeed. Just remember it takes time.”- IYF student
We couldn’t agree more! At The Harraseeket Foundation, our passion is helping young people (age 14-39) imagine their future with mentoring and at-work experiences. Since we started in 2017, we’ve helped countless young people across Northern Virginia. We have the passion to do much more, inspiring interested communities to support young people in new ways. As this wise student says, we know that takes time. We will succeed with your financial support.
“Once I’m out of the comfort zone I can do better things and my life can make a difference.”
We love the idea of going outside our comfort zone! We started in a faith community where everyone knew each other. Then we pushed past that for “better things,” reaching out to new communities. Those communities in turn inspired us to support students from diverse socioeconomic, racial, and cultural backgrounds who benefit from an additional adult in their lives, and from opening their eyes to new opportunities. We’re ready to go further outside our comfort zone! Your donation will make a difference in helping us do that.
“What you give to the world is what you’re going to receive.”
So true! What do our volunteers and donors receive? Seeing young people make meaningful connections, gain confidence, learn to trust nonjudgmental and caring voices, and uncover and pursue new dreams. Mentors, volunteers, and donors receive much more than they give.
“I am capable of anything with the right mindset.” - IYF
Our mindset is to change lives. We’ve surprised ourselves with what we’re capable of: hosting over 75 workshops, forums and panels on a wide variety of topics to inspire hundreds of young people; organizing internship fairs, vocation fairs, and career fairs for more than 3,000 young people; involving over 200 employers offering at-work experiences; recruiting dozens of volunteers; and training scores of mentors. All of this has inspired teachers, counselors, coaches, employers, community leaders, and community organizations to get involved. We want to reach new communities to share what we’ve learned and inspire them! YOU can help us do that with a giving mindset.
