Celebrate National Mentoring Month by Sharing Your Story

Earlier this week some of our volunteers joined us for a holiday lunch to begin imagining the future of our Imagining Your Future program. We kicked off our event by sharing stories about intergenerational connections that changed our lives. Stories of mentors who opened doors for us, mentors who changed paths that started in places like Costa Rica and Russia, mentors who helped us believe in ourselves. There were tears around the room, and lots of laughter. Comments afterward included “gobsmacked,” “wonderful,” “inspiring,” and “incredible.”

Our volunteers sharing stories about mentors who changed their lives.

Yet these stories are not unusual or extraordinary. They happen all the time when a nonjudgmental adult is there to support a young person and ensure they feel like they matter, that they are loved.

Some tell us they waited years, even decades, to realize they were mentored, and then thank their mentor. Maybe you’ve experienced someone coming up to you to tell you that years ago, you changed their lives simply by listening, and caring.

January is National Mentoring Month. We at Harraseeket suggest you not wait to thank people who listened, who cared, who mentored you. A phone call, an email, a visit. They’ll be gobsmacked.

And please tell us you’d like to make new stories by connecting with young people, and getting involved in our Imagining Your Future movement.

Happy holidays!
